What is the most unexpected delight your had on a trip? Maybe you met some amazing people, a fantastic view, a perfect lake . . . Mine is finding a beautiful hidden oasis - it was baking hot, we were on the walk out of a 3 day camp in the hills and went up a small stream to fill up the water bottles. We stumbled over small hill to find a shaded oasis with water pools and falls, trees, birds and flat grassy areas.

Double-decker root bridges in Cherrapunji, India. We walked down ca. 19,000, moss-covered steps to see these. And then back again.

For me it was rounding a corner on my John O'Groats to Lands End cycle to see the whole of Loch Ness.. I had said from the planning I wanted to spend a night on the edge of the Loch, and I did.. I'll never forget how it felt to see that view unfold in front of me. Please excuse the picture quality, by this stage it had rained so much my camera died on me so I was using my camera phone..

On a solo overnight canoe trip this summer the rain was coming down hard as I cooked dinner under my tarp. As I sat there the trees around me started filling up with little chickadees. Soon the trees where filed with dozens of them all happily chirping away. They flittered around my camp site for about 10 minutes and then moved off. It was one of the strangest things I've experienced. Quite enjoyed it.

Seeing a rainbow near the summit of a snow covered Arenig Fawr last year, a beautiful sight.

Had an unexpected delight on Sunday night.
Was driving from somewhere in Fife to somewhere in Perth, whizzing round the windy back roads. I turn a corner and see a man standing by a car on the side of the road in the distance. I get closer and discover it that the man is one of my best friends who is lost. I live in Aberdeen 80 miles away, he lives in Shrewsbury/West Coast of Scotland/Lakes. Delightful.

I was out in the woods with the plan to make a bivvy from fallen and dead wood. I arrived at my location to find. Ended up just using it and putting a tarp over. The picture doesn't do the size of it justice. I could stand inside it easily.
