I bought a Surly Disc Trucker and love it so much I sold my road bike. The bike can ride road, trail or anywhere in between.

Yeah both of those would do the job well. But I have a cyclo cross bike already, so really I'm after a mtb. The mud capabilities of the genesis make it look like a good winter bike too.

Grab yourself an inexpensive lowrider rack like this on www.mec.ca/product/1805-084/mec-lowrider-front-cycling-rack/ . This is the one I use on both my bikes. Unfortunately my Norco didn't have braze ons and the U brackets that came with the rack where designed for narrower forks. A quick trip to the hardware store for larger brackets and some extra locknuts did the trick. A little electrical tape wrapped around the brackets and plates to protect the forks paint and trimming down the length of the brackets with a dermal tool once installed finished it all up. Have used them now a number of times fully loaded on some rough single track and they have worked beautifully. Good luck and hope to see some pics of your bike when your all done.

I've been using this Giant Boulder since I was 17 years old (now 31 years old). I've used it for everything from hard trail riding to long road journeys and have setups for both. Smooth tyres for road and chunky for mud etc. I also have comfort saddles and thinner saddles for more intense riding etc. The thing seems to be bombproof and it's just an alulite frame. Just keeps trucking. A couple of years back I was hammering my road and cycle track journeys up to 100 miles or so on this 1984? Ralaigh Ace. It was geared heavy in that the gears went as follows. 1st 12mph at 90rpm 3rd 15mph at 90rpm 5th 18mph at 90rpm 7th 21mph at 90rpm I sold it and bought a much more expensive bike which I regretted every time I rode it to the point I just sold the road bike and stuck with my giant. That Ace was the peak bike fitting for me it was stunning for long journeys.

Personally I really really liked it it was wicked smooth and the gearing went so low on the one I rode. Amazing kit.
