This is what I would normally take on an overnight in the summer. As we head into fall and winter the summer bag gets replaced by my warmer mummy bag. The OR Bug Bivy gets replaced by a Mountain Warehouse bivy bag. I love when the mosquitoes are finally gone in the fall and one can dispense with all the bug related paraphernalia. Here in Ontario they really are quite intense during the summer months. My beer can alcohol stove gets replaced by a MSR Whisperlight stove which functions better in colder temps. And of course a few more layers are added in the clothing department. This setup has served me well for many an adventure.

Nice set-up. Mines is almost the same. No therm-a-rest chair, a spare baselayer + a softshell jacket, water bottle and that's me good for a night around 0 Celsius. Haven't weighted it but it all fits in a 30L rucksack.

Here's mine: www.flickr.com/photos/alastairhumphreys/8692298069/in/photostream/My kit list of choice: Sleeping bag. Don’t buy anything special. Just go with what you have and as many jumpers as necessary. Sleeping mat. If you suspect you will not do a lot of camping just buy one of these cheap ones. Bivvy bag. There are cheap, medium and expensive options. If you’re worried about rain take a basha too. Wooly hat, even in summer. Waterproof clothes. Warm clothes. Torch. Toothbrush (put the toothpaste on at home and wrap the brush in clingfilm) and toilet paper. Food and water.

I totally agree with the make due with what you have philosophy. My summer bag is the same one my parents got me when I was in camp as a kid. My tarp is a simple nylon one that's at least 30 years old. Most of the rest of my kit I acquired over many years. Some of it may not be the lightest or latest and greatest but it gets the job done. And in the end all that really matters is that you get out and use it.

Lol I always remember forgetting my sleeping bag and Mat, on a cold November in Snowdonia. My small valhalla corsa supplied an on and off night of shivering sleep. When the sun Came in the morning I was a happy man
